La demografía de los estudiantes de escuelas públicas está cambiando rápidamente, incluso en el Sur. Eso significa que los distritos escolares deben encontrar formas de satisfacer las necesidades de un cuerpo estudiantil cada vez más hispano y multilingüe, dicen investigadores y defensores.

En Alabama, por ejemplo, la población mayoritariamente hispana de estudiantes de inglés creció de un 2,4 por ciento a un 5 por ciento en los últimos 10 años. En el distrito escolar de Russellville en la parte norte del estado, los estudiantes de inglés ahora constituyen una cuarta parte de la población estudiantil.

A nivel nacional, los estudiantes de inglés son una de las poblaciones estudiantiles de más rápido crecimiento. Sin embargo, los defensores dicen que las políticas y los fondos estatales y federales van a la zaga de lo que se necesita para garantizar que se satisfagan las necesidades lingüísticas y académicas de estos estudiantes. Ese es especialmente el caso cuando se trata de clasificar las mejores prácticas para estudiantes inmigrantes mayores que tienen menos tiempo para dominar el inglés y cumplir con los requisitos de graduación.

La mayoría de los estudiantes de inglés del país son hispanos, un grupo demográfico en rápido crecimiento dentro de las escuelas públicas.

Para adaptarse a su creciente población hispana y de estudiantes de inglés, el distrito de Russellville usó fondos federales de ayuda para la pandemia para contratar asistentes de instrucción bilingües a partir de 2021. Trabajando principalmente con estudiantes en los grados K a 2, los asistentes —en conjunto con maestros de aula general y profesores de inglés como segunda lengua —han producido resultados. Con el apoyo adicional, más de estos jóvenes estudiantes han alcanzado sus metas de dominio del idioma.

Pero dado que los fondos para estos asistentes se agotarán en mayo de 2024, distritos como Russellville enfrentan desafíos para mantener iniciativas que funcionen para los estudiantes de inglés, tanto jóvenes como mayores.
